Course offerings

Fashion & Wardrobe Construction

Explore textiles and clothing construction. Analyze your personal style, fashion trends and use of color through clothing and accessories. Clothing construction on traditional and computerized sewing machines.

Fashion Design & Merchandising

Take a look inside the fast paced and challenging career of the fashion industry. Analyze fashion history, designers and elements of design while studying the business of fashion.

Creative Crafts

Students learn various traditional craft techniques and explore their favorite personal creative outlet. Not only will you learn tried and true craft methods, you can also create mbroidery designs on our new computerized sewing mechines.

Interior Design

Learn how to make your room uniquely yours. Show your style through interior decorating. Computer programs help create and design your ideal home design.

Basic Foods

Tired of waiting for someone to cook you something delicious? Do you only know how to make Hot Pockets? You need Basic Foods--find your inner chef and learn your way around the kitchen!

American Foods

Were you the star of your kitchen group in Basic Foods? Do you dream about cooking while sitting in math class? Then you need to continue your cooking education while exploring the food traditions of the United States. (Prerequisite: Basic Foods)

International Foods

If you have an adventurous palate and like to try new foods, International Foods is the course for you. You will make egg rolls like a pro and impress yourself with your homemade calzone. If you like to cook and eat, see you in International Foods. (Prerequisite: Basic Foods)

Nutrition for Fitness

You are what you eat! Establish your healthy eating and activity habits now to support a quality healthy lifestyle. Make nutritious and delicious dishes in Nutrition for Fitness.

Independent Living

Life on your own is a learning experience. Get a head start by learning the basics of self-sufficiency. Write a resume, balance a checkbook and understand the dos and don'ts of credit.

Parenting

Explore the reality of pregnancy and parenting through the use of technology. Care for a computerized simulated baby 24 hours a day for 4 days.
Child Development Learn how to work with children ages 3 to 5. We work in the PHS preschool with 16 young children for two weeks and plan the age-appropriate activities during other class time.
Child Development Lab Work and plan activities/learning centers for children during 12 week of nursery school. Teach and manage the nursery school for one full morning.(Prerequisite: Child Developement)

Child Development Management

Work with the preschool children teaching through creative bulletin boards and other activities. Create your portfolio for college or for your first job in early childhood education. Plan and present the closing program of songs and finger plays. Lead the children in this presentation on the PHS stage. (Prerequisite: Child Developement Lab)

All of the FSC courses are 1 semester in length and .5 credits each. They are offered in the fall and spring semesters.

Philosophy  

Family and Consumer Science education focuses on an integrative approach to relationships among individuals, families, and communities, as well as the environments in which they function.  Our mission is to effect the optimal well-being of families and individuals for lifelong participation in home and society by teaching technical and social skills with a practical application resulting in rational thinking.  Focusing on the Pennsylvania State Standards for Family and Consumer Science our program addresses current issues of financial and resource management, balancing family, work, and community responsibility, food science and nutrition, and child development.  The nature of family and consumer science studies, its content and goals make it a particularly unique avenue for contributing to the life-long learning for every student.
